Conceptual Inspiration
Drawing inspiration from Wyndham Lewis’s 1912 abstract painting Figure Composition, the project explores the poetic translation of a 2D fragmented visual language into a tangible 3D built form. By deconstructing the abstract flat composition and reassembling its elements in physical space, the design creates an immersive spatial ensemble that blurs the boundaries between art and architecture, structure and landscape.
Functioning as both a desert resort and a long-term ecological intervention, the internal arrangement is carefully organized to balance privacy with community. The program comprises three distinct private suite clusters alongside a central communal zone, offering visitors a peaceful and secluded retreat within the desolate desert.
Spatial Layout
The architecture is defined by three main components: a lightweight truss structure, a large undulating roof, and a textured ground layer. The expansive roof provides vital shade while acting as an active hydrological machine—collecting rainwater on its top surface and capturing evaporated moisture on its underside. This integrated water collection system then directs the moisture downward through vertical columns into underground reservoirs.
Structure & Hydrology
Materiality & Ecology
The building's facades are clad in weathering steel, chosen for its resilience against extreme wind, sand, and flowing water. Over time, these surfaces develop rich, organic textures that record the passage of the environment, blending the architecture into the evolving landscape. Furthermore, the sustained moisture cycles of evaporation and condensation gradually alter the local microclimate, giving rise to wetlands that spread outward from the base of the columns and allow vegetation to transform the barren desert into a thriving oasis.
